Lena Adu-Kofi


PROFILE OF LENA ADU-KOFI – BA, JD, LUTCF

Lena Adu-Kofi has over 35 years of management, leadership and industry experience; with 30 of those years dedicated to the insurance industry.  She is the co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Safety Insurance Brokers Limited (SIBL), one of the top four (4) insurance broking companies in Ghana.  She was also the first woman to be licensed as an Insurance Broker in Ghana, and is currently in her second term as the first woman to be elected as National President of the Insurance Brokers Association of Ghana (IBAG).

She started her insurance career in 1986 at MetLife Insurance Company, formerly Metropolitan Insurance Company in Medford, Massachusetts, USA, where she gained over 10 years of insurance Sales experience. She specialized in the selling of Individual & Group Life, Health & Disability Insurance; Property and Casualty Insurance; Mutual Funds & Annuities; Estate Analysis & Retirement Planning; and Small and Large Group Benefit Plan Arrangements. Since then, Lena's career has spanned to Underwriting, Reinsurance and immense Broking experience, where she has contributed largely to the Ghana Insurance industry, especially through new product development.


Lena holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Science from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology (KNUST), Ghana, and a Juris Doctor of Law degree (JD) from the New England Law School, Boston, Massachusetts, USA. In 1993, she was conferred with the title of Life Underwriter Training Council Fellow (LUTCF), after specializing in Life, Health and Disability Insurances. She is also a National Association of Security Dealers (NASD) Series 6 and 63 Registered Representative.


Lena is a strong advocate of market-based solutions and issues that affect the insurance industry as a whole and served as a Committee member of the ‘No Premium No Cover’ Directive; a member of the National Insurance Commission’s Compulsory Insurance Committee; and also, a Full Member of the Institute of Risk Management Professionals of Ghana (IRMPG). She is the Broker-Consultant and co-developer and promoter of the GAB Health Insurance Company (GHIC): a health insurance company established to meet the health needs of members of the Ghana banking industry.


Lena is a Council Member of the Ghana Insurance College, and chairs the Project Committee of the Council, set up to oversee the development of a 65-acre land into a professional college.  Lena is the Vice-Chairperson of the Insurance Awareness Coordinators Committee (IACG) since its formation in 2015 by the insurance industry with support from Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH (GIZ). She is also a member of the Gambia-based West African Insurance Companies Association (WAICA), and Chartered Insurance Institute of Ghana (CIIG). Lena was recently awarded the Most Outstanding Female in Insurance Broking by Feminine Ghana Achievement Award, 7th Edition, 2021 .


She is currently a Board member of SIBL Group; a co-founder of Afro-Asian Reinsurance Brokers Limited; and a co-founder of St. Jude of Lord’s Foundation.


Lena has authored two publications: (1) The Impact of International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Structural Adjustment Programs on Sub-Saharan African Women, and (2) Domestic Violence in Turkey: Making a Case for Political Asylum for Turkish Women. She has also presented position papers on insurance at many national, regional, and international conferences.

Lena is married with three children, and enjoys reading, researching and travelling.
